In 2016 I battled my first real bout of depression, it was through therapy that I also realised that I had been dealing with anxiety, and my counsellor recommended I write about how I was feeling as a way of dealing with it.  I decided to share my writing anonymously online, and before long I had people liking my work and commenting that they could relate, this drove me to continue sharing my story and also encourage others to do the same as it had helped me immensely in my recovery.  Mental health will always be a part of our lives and I will always do my bit to keep the conversations going around it.

Favourite movie: Romeo & Juliet (the Baz Luhrmann version with Leo, in case you were wondering)

Favourite TV show: Bring back Desperate Housewives!

Favourite book: I'm really not a huge book lover, but The Da Vinci code always sticks out in my mind when people ask me this question, because it was the first book which had me hooked and I literally couldn't put down.

Favourite music artist/band: So many.. I love Spice Girls, Eminem and everything in between, I have a very varied music taste!

Favourite quote: Money can't buy happiness.

Your idol: You know, I don't feel like I've ever really had a big stand out idol figure in my life.  I always respect and admire those who are open and honest, the celebrities who don't try and make out that life is perfect, but show that they are just real, like the rest of us.  I really like the young royals, not because I am a royalist, but because of how they have used their position and status to raise awareness about mental health recently, I think they have made a great change in the attitudes towards mental health, and I like how they have been open about their own struggles, showing that deep down we are all just the same, and that mental health can affect anyone.

Give me one weird fact about you?

I love ham, cheese and jam sandwiches, they are the best.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

I jumped off a 35ft cliff into the Caribbean ocean once, I closed my eyes and hoped for the best, but the wind swept under my legs and I landed in a seated position with an almighty slap/splash.  All I heard was a cry of "oooh" and "ouch" from the crowds watching on *cringe*

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you bring?

My family, a notepad, and a pen.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

My hubby, our 2 children, and my Nan & Grandad who are no longer with us, I would have loved my children to have met them and vice versa.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

I'd like to think I'd have a good chance at winning a "holding your breath under the water" competition…

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

Hogwarts, of course.

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

Life is a lesson, I look back on some of my hardest and challenging times and whilst they certainly didn't feel good at the time, I now realise that they have made me a stronger and wiser person.  If you are struggling with your mental health, don't do it alone, open up to someone, it's the best thing you can do for yourself and things will get better once you are not bottling it all up.

I'm passionate about promoting honesty, openness and education around mental health. 1 in 4 of us will be affected by mental illness in our lives, which means if we're not in that number personally then a whole heap of people around us definitely are. I think it's so important for us to constantly be challenging the stigma around mental illness, opening up and sharing our own experiences, even if it makes other people uncomfortable. It's the reality a quarter of the world faces - being politely and quietly uncomfortable doesn't help anyone. I share my own experiences with bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and eating disorders on my blog.

Favourite movie: I'm a bit of a movie buff, so this is such a hard question! If I had to pick, it'd probably be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Favourite TV show: The US Office

Favourite book: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Favourite music artist/band: There are so many! Right now, probably Crystal Fighters.

Favourite quote: "Fall in love with your solitude." - Rupi Kaur

Give me one weird fact about you?

I've lived at 7 different addresses in the past 3 years.

What's the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

I once gave my teacher a black eye by accidentally hitting her in the face with a cricket ball.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what 3 things would you bring?

Kindle, notebook, pen.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party, dead or alive?

Karl Marx, Mahatma Gandhi, Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Eating mango sorbet.

Parting words of wisdom?

Be kind, always.

I was diagnosed with depression around ten years ago, and anxiety last year - I also live with panic attacks and v low self-esteem. All this said, I am steadily getting better with thanks to MIND and their counselling service, and I began a blog last year which I call my 'sanctuary' as it became somewhere that I could talk about my experiences, raise awareness and let others know they're not alone. It's been the best thing I've ever done!

Favourite movie: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland (the animated one ofc!)

Favourite TV show: Victoria & The Great British Bake Off

Favourite book: The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Favourite music artist/band: Foo Fighters!

Favourite quote: "Fall seven times, stand up eight"

Your idol: My Auntie! Inspiring, free and happy. Total wild thing.

Give me one weird fact about you?

I get really aggy if someone else lays on my pillow on my bed. I don't know. V weird!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

I decided in my drunken state that it'd be a great idea to get up on the karaoke machine in my local & belt out 'Sweet Child o'Mine', but in my best cockney accent. MORTIFYING.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you bring?

Bug repellent spray (crucial), my boyfriend bc he's basically Bear Grylls (does he count as a thing?!) and a tipi. Bit more fashionable than a tent right?!

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Dave Grohl, Audrey Hepburn, Mary Berry, Winston Churchill & Gal Gadot. What a mix!

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Finding something to panic about. Literally my life!

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

HOGWARTS OF COURSE. Or the Shire?!

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

Don't for one second believe that you're alone in this world. Some of the best people I know, I've met through talking about mental health, so don't be afraid to use your voice to find comfort, to give hope, to make a connection or to share an experience. You are not your illness. It's not selfish to take care of yourself. Cleanse your life of anything toxic. Stand tall, you're braver than you know.

I’m a Time to Change Champion and I volunteer with my local Mind. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression since I was 16, as I lost a lot of family members whilst growing up, and losing my grandad before my GCSEs was probably the trigger to my mental health struggles. I’m now starting my third round of therapy, after having had CBT twice.

Favourite movie: Walk The Line

Favourite TV show: Friends

Favourite book: Anne of Green Gables or The Perks of Being a Wallflower!

Favourite music artist/band: Too hard to choose! I love loads of different genres of music, it just depends what mood I’m in!

Favourite quote: ‘I’m not afraid of storms, for I am learning to sail my ship.’ – Louisa May Alcott

Your idol: Miranda Hart – she’s hilarious, relatable and completely unapologetic about herself which I love.

Give me one weird fact about you?

I can make one eye look in one direction to the other!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

There are far too many to mention…being called Dave is the only one that comes to mind haha!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you bring?

A lifetime supply of water, Shake Shack, and a library of books!

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Freddie Mercury, Miranda Hart, Beyonce, Meryl Streep and Mindy Kaling.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Probably sleeping knowing me haha!

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

I would LOVE to go to Diagon Alley!

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

It doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing, as long as what you’re doing what makes you happy. Your mental illness isn’t a life sentence; recovery is 100% possible. You are no less of a person if you struggle with your mental health – you’re stronger than you know.
