Blog: Be Kind To Your Mind

Personal Experience - Diagnosis of OCD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Depression, Panic Disorder and Skin Picking. I raise awareness by writing about my experiences and selling my mental health wristbands for MH charities.

Favourite movie: Mr & Mrs Smith and Alice in Wonderland

Favourite TV show: Pretty little liars and Sherlock

Favourite book: It's Kind of a Funny Story - Ned Vizzini

Favourite music artist/band: This question is like picking between children, haha. But i'll say Panic! at the Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and Mayday Parade

Favourite quote: 'And though she be but little, she is fierce.' and 'imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.'

Your idol: Demi Lovato is a huge inspiration for a high functioning woman with mental health issues. Also, my nan because even though shes not here anymore, she still inspires me everyday.

Give me one weird fact about you?

I had 12 teeth out once and I had 4 teeth that grew in my mouth that I wasn't even meant to have. That always seems to shock people.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

Either - fighting so hard for a job and convincing them to take a chance on me, only for me to have a complete mental health breakdown and having to tell them after a couple weeks that I had to quit, OR when I was arrested once when I was drunk and stood in the cell singing the theme tune to orange is the new black haha.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Brendon Urie, Dave Grohl, Miley Cyrus, Elvis and the Mad Hatter (does that count?)

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic Sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

The ability to jump to a bad conclusion in the least amount of time.

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

Wonderland!

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

Your mental illness is not your identity. You are the only one who can limit your greatness. Remember, you are enough. Be perfectly imperfect. Grow through what you go through. Your potential is endless so go and do what you were created to do. That thing that makes your heart beat faster and your smile grow wider. You are not a victim, you are victorious.

I work with children who have MH problems and I spend my time building up their confidence and helped them work through it. I like to see myself as a safe adult they can approach when they feel anxious, sad, or just generally want to talk about MH. Personal experience is I suffer with anxiety, which, thankfully, is getting better by the day, but I have suffered severely to a point where I refused to leave the house for weeks on end. I still have some anxiety issues which interfere with my daily life but not to the extent they once were.

Favourite movie: The Princess Bride

Favourite TV show: either Friends or Game of Thrones, can’t decide!

Favourite book: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Favourite music artist/band: Chris Young and Rascal Flatts

Favourite quote: “it is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our abilities”

Your idol: JK Rowling, closely followed by Helen Mirren.

Give me one weird fact about you?

Ermm, not really a weird fact but I’ve got dyspraxia which makes me walk into stuff a lot

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

My life is a series of embarrassing moments!

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you bring?

Stationary set (one including a notebook) , a survival kit, and a book on how to survive on a desert island.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

JK Rowling, Helen Mirren, Stephen Hawking, Jane Austen, and Mary Wollstencraft.

A lot of people in my family suffer from depression, but it's my mother and I who suffer from it the worst and actively get help with coping with every day tasks. I, myself, have a history of self-harm (cutting, burning, etc) and have attempted to take my own life on numerous occasions due to being bullied both in life and on the Internet,  and because of this I have a very hard time trusting others and feeling included in fandoms.

Favourite movie: I'm a fan of the Deadpool and Spider-Man movies but generally I have a hard time concentrating so I don't really have "a favourite."

Favourite TV show: The Good Place

Favourite book/manga: I read a lot of them (manga) but Pandora Hearts has a special place in my heart because of how long I followed the series for, but other favourites include Relife, Seraph of the End and Horimiya.

Favourite music artist/band: I'm more for musicals, personally, and my ultimate favourites are Hamilton, Wicked, and Blood Brothers (a beautifully tragic tale that sheds light on how depression can hit you at any time and how it can affect a person).

Your idol: Most voice actors, honestly.

Give me one weird fact about you?

I was born with no wisdom teeth!

Most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

I recently broke my tooth from eating brisket and now I don't trust that meat at all. I also sprained my foot from running too fast when I was at primary school.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what three things would you take?

My cat, my medication and my bed

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Kristen Bell, Russell Howard, Daniel Howell, Robin Williams, Tom Holland

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

Don't dwell too long on the past or the present will fly by and don't overthink things for time waits for no man or women. If there's something you want, grab it and have no regrets but most importantly... Keep on fighting. Every day.

I write my own mental health blog and do some bits for charities such as handing out leaflets etc. I have suffered with mental health for around 10 years due to my mum dying when I was 8. This has meant that due to the trauma from a child I now have a lot of anxiety and suffer with depression and PTSD due to past and recent events. I have suffered for such a long amount of time and it has now become part of every day life. I have tried to take my own life twice due to not being able to get the help I need. Lucky enough the hospital intervened and I have been able to get some support. So I am hugely passionate about spreading the word about mental health and how it can affect anyone of us. I am determined to stamp out the stigma which surrounds this illness and hopefully in doing this I can help people suffering.

Favourite Movie: This is a difficult one but I would have to say Titanic

Favourite TV Show: RuPaul Drag Race

Favourite Book: Me before you by JoJo Moyes

Favourite Artist/band: At the moment I am loving Sam Smith

Favourite Quote: Life is like a camera. Focus on what's important. Capture the good times. And if things don't work out, just take another shot

My Idol: I would have to say my Dad. My Dad has been through a lot in his life including losing his wife but he is always positive and does no matter what it takes to make me happy!

Give me one weird fact about you?

I hate feet and even the thought of someones feet makes me feel sick.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to me?

Wetting myself at a friends house when in bigger school.. I couldn’t help it I was laughing too much.

If you were stuck on a desert island what three things would you bring?

I would bring my Superdry hoodie for when I get cold at night. Photos of my friends/family. I would take my favourite book to keep me going when there is nothing to do.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Marilyn Monroe, My mum and dad, my brother and The Queen

If you could turn any activity into an olympic sport what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Sleeping/staying in bed ;)

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

Hogwarts if it was a real wizard school :D

Parting words/words of wisdom:

Treat every day as a new day. We never know what is around the corner, so live every moment as if it was your last. Love yourself!

As much as I'd love to be able to say that I'm always involved in a lot of mental health awareness, I'm not unfortunately. My experience stops when I finished school, really, where we would be involved quite a lot of charity fund raising for mental health charities etc and making the school much more aware, it was good though and we managed to get the message across and the staff were always so lovely and helpful to anyone in need so it was quite a success. I'd like to do more though.

My main reason is that about two or three years ago I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. It made my life quite awful for a long time. I still struggle now and I have made an attempt on my own life before but I have a lot more help and support which makes it easier to deal with but it never lessens the strain of having those horrid days where I don't want to move, socialise or even wash because I just feel pain, invisible pain but that doesn't make it hurt any less.

My favourites -

Movie: Inglorious Basterds/Princess Diaries 1&2

TV Show: QI

Book: Ovid's Metamorphoses/Angela Carter: The Bloody Chamber

Music: Bon Iver/Melanie Martinez

Quote: "perfer et obdura, dolor hic tibi proderit olim" roughly translated to "be patient and tough, one day this pain will be useful to you" - Ovid, Remedia Amoris

Idol: I don't really have one that I can think of.

I can't think of a weird fact about me (there are some I just can't think of them)

What's the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

I was once coloured my face with yellow highlighter pen not thinking it worked and no one could see it until we got the airport and everybody saw it but I didn't have time to go and wash my face so I just had to walk around with yellow highlighter all over my face until we got through to duty free (so for a good 90 mins). I was mortified.

If you were stuck on a desert island what three things would you bring?

a knife, a big box of matches, and a mirror.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party (dead or alive)?

Ovid, Stephen Fry, Rihanna, Vincent Van Gogh, Dame Julie Andrews

If you could turn any activity into an olympic sport what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

biscuit dunking

What fictional place would you most like to go to?

Rivendell

Your parting words/words of wisdom:

My parting words of wisdom would be that even though things can be so so difficult sometimes, there is always support available for you somewhere and all you have to do is ask because no one wants to know that you were struggling on your own, people care and want to help you.
