Easy Self-Help: Banishing Your Worries!

Probably one of the most commonly used words that I use in life is 'worry'. I worry about EVERYTHING. What I'm going to have for breakfast next Thursday, have I cooked enough chicken nuggets to give everybody an equal amount, if that spoonful equated to one sugar and did I shut the front door when I left this morning? So much so that a previous therapist advised that I take out 'worry time' for myself, where I schedule a time to allow my mind to humour these worries - some real, some completely fictional and not worth the thought. 

 

Now, I didn't find the 'worry time' particularly useful. Maybe I didn't dedicate enough time to it, who knows, but I just didn't get on with it. (That's not to say that you won't find it helpful!) However I have found a technique that I find reasonably helpful for myself and my negative thoughts.

 

It's simple - for every negative thought I have, I combat it with two positives. 

 

I use this technique to settle my worries, combat anxiety and to generally relieve myself of stress. Of course, worries are a part of every day life. But they should by no means take it over and hold you hostage. And I'll give you an example of a real worry that's been on my mind for months. 

 

I'm going to New York in December and I am worried that I'll have an anxiety attack and be sick on the drive from Cornwall to Heathrow Airport. This is my negative thought. However, my positive thoughts are; HELLO?! I'm going back to NYC at Christmas time and I'm spending it with my boyfriend. And now.. I just feel excited. 

 

I try to apply this to anything that I'm feeling particularly negative about, it can be far away events such as the above or simply having to go to work. E.g. I have to go to work tomorrow morning, but it will help me with my body clock and I'll be earning money. By finishing my worry with a positive, I'm giving that negative thought a big shove off a metaphorical cliff. 

 

I find this effective by simply thinking about it, but I also find it quite useful to write them down when I'm feeling particularly worried or anxious and it helps ease my concern.
